Later printings of what was a very popular anti-slavery narrative, the first edition of which considered to be one of Harriet Beecher Stowe's primary feminine sources for "Uncle Tom's Cabin." The source for Stowe's characters has always been a subject of great interest and argument. But among her female characters, Mrs Stowe herself cites "a small religious tract" on the life of "a coloured woman named Phebe." The tract deals with the life of Phebe Ann Jacobs, or "Happy Phebe," originally appearing in a little tract published by J.S. Stewart around 1850.
